Class 4 Newsletter Term 2 2018
Dear Parents / Carers,
Welcome back! We hope that you have had a relaxing half term break and are ready for one of the busiest and most exciting terms of the year with the build up to Christmas! Our new topic this term is ‘Fire and Ice’ and we have lots of exciting learning planned, as well as our Nativity performance before Christmas.
Thank you to you all for ensuring your children arrive on time in the morning. Our morning routine is an important and valuable part of the school day so thank you. Please continue to ensure that your child’s book bag is brought to school daily along wth their reading book, reading record and keywords folder.
Playtimes – Please ensure that your child has a coat in school everyday, as well as a hat and gloves if it is very cold (clearly named please). If you haven’t done so already, please can you provide your child with a pair of wellies in school, so that they can access our outdoor area without getting their shoes wet!
Snacks - You do not need to provide a snack as the children are given daily fruit at break time. There is always more than one option of fruit or vegetable available. However, if you do send a snack in with your child can we politely remind you that it must be a fruit or vegetable and must be kept in the bookbag ready to go outside with them. The children are not allowed to access their lunch box at break time.
Learning this term will include;
Religious Education – This term, RE will continue to be taught each week through a combination of RE lessons, Collective Worship, Gospel Assemblies and Hymn practice. Gospel Values will continue to link throughout all areas of the children’s learning. We begin with ‘Remembrance’ and then we will continue with our theme of ‘Prayers, Saints and Feasts’ followed by Advent.
English – English will continue to be taught daily. This will include writing, GPS (Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling), Guided Reading and Comprehension. Letters and Sounds will be taught daily in addition to this as we continue to prepare all Year 1 children for the Phonics Screening Test in May 2019. This term, along with other stories, we will be looking at ‘Zog’ and exploring this story through ‘Talk for Writing’.
Reading Books – Thank you to you all for all of your support at home with reading. Your support is vital in ensuring that the children grow into independent readers with a passion for books. We ask that you continue to sign their reading record each time they read and make comments if needed.
Mathematics – Mathematics will continue to be taught daily, including a MOT (maths on track) session every day. This will give daily opportunity for revision and application of children’s learning.
PE/Games – Please ensure that children have their full St Mary’s PE kit all week. If you would like an up to date list of our St Mary’s PE kit, please ask in the office. They will need trainers for outdoor PE sessions. Please check that all items of kit are clearly labelled.
Science, History/Geography, Music, PSHE, Computing and Art/DT will be also taught each week. In History this term we will be looking at The Great Fire of London which will also guide our Geography and Art learning.
***Change of Date*** – Our KS1 Nativity will now take place on Thursday 13th December. There will be two perfomances at 2pm and 6pm. Further details to follow. Please do continue to keep an eye on the calendar on the school website and your e-mails which are always the most up to date sources of information. We also publish news and requests in the newsletter from time to time, so please do check the letter each week.
If you would like to speak to me, I will be outside each morning as the bell rings and then at 3pm collection, alternatively send a message to me via the school office.
Thank you once again for your support since the beginning of September. Class 4 are such a lovely group of children and we are looking forward to continuing to make this step in their learning journey as engaging and inspiring as possisble.
